No matter the industry or mission, the fundamentals of great governance remain universal. It comes down to listening well, asking the right questions, and balancing innovation with prudence. Each board taught me something new, and I carry those insights forward – I'm still learning, even after 40 years.

My 45-year career as a business lawyer (with specialties in mergers & acquisitions and employee share ownership) has been a tremendous asset in the boardroom. It means I can integrate legal and business strategy seamlessly – translating the big picture into practical plans. I know how to spot risks, navigate complex deals, and ensure every decision is backed by due diligence. Just as importantly, I've learned that behind every deal are people – relationships and trust often matter even more than the fine print. This perspective allows me to guide boards through tough decisions with both confidence and care. Whether it's evaluating a merger or signing a major contract, I help my fellow directors ask the right questions early and resolve issues transparently. The goal is always the same: choices that stand on solid legal ground and align with the organization's values. |

Effective board leadership isn't about wielding power – it's about building trust and facilitating collaboration. As a chair and long-time director, I see my role as creating the conditions for open dialogue and smart decisions. That means drawing out quieter voices on the board, using interest-based tools when conflicts arise, and ensuring diverse perspectives shape our strategy. My 30 years as a mediator and facilitator have taught me that every voice matters, even (and especially) when people disagree. I’ve seen firsthand how a gentle question or a listening ear can transform tension into a breakthrough insight. Whether we're discussing a high-stakes merger or next year's budget, I strive to lead with emotional intelligence, humility, and a focus on the human side of every issue. I also love connecting ideas and people across sectors. With experience from tech startups to nonprofits, I've found that a solution in one arena can spark innovation in another. Bridging these worlds helps teams think outside the box and see challenges from fresh angles. (hide ¶) |

I believe you should never stop growing – good governance evolves, and so must we. I earned the ICD.D director designation and completed specialized courses on board chair leadership and digital transformation for directors – today's governance challenges (from cyber risks to disruptive innovation) demand that we stay ahead of the curve. I am in my 12th year chairing CEO peer groups (MacKay CEO Forums) – a masterclass in leadership that taught me invaluable lessons on guiding organizations through change and honed my ability to listen deeply, ask insightful questions, and coach leaders. Additionally, I've pursued training in leadership development and executive coaching to better mentor management teams and my fellow board members. Training with Erickson Coaching International has enhanced my ability to mentor and support leadership development effectively. For me, it's not about collecting credentials – it's about keeping my perspective fresh and relevant. Whether it's understanding the latest digital trends or exploring new approaches to team dynamics, I love bringing new ideas into the boardroom to spark thoughtful discussions. (hide ¶) |
